Comments by Other Famous Artists about Zhu Xuanxian (朱宣咸)

Yan Han (famous artist, honorary chairmain of China Graphic Artists Association, former vice-president and professor of China Central Academy of Fine Arts):

The works by Zhu Xuanxian have many unique features for us to learn from and research on.

Liu Kaiqu (renowned sculptor, the former deputy president of China Artists Association, president of Shanghai Artists Association, deputy president of the China Central Academy of Fine Arts, president of the National Art Museum of China):

In my impression, Comrade Zhu Xuanxian was diligent, and was an activist in the progressive woodcut force in Shanghai before liberation and also in the Joint Office of National Fine Arts Association of China, National Woodcut Association of China and National Caricature Association of China before liberation. I saw his works from the 1940s and 1950s, and he had always been creating new works with great efforts. The artistic and academic characteristics reflected from his works are precious.

Yang Keyang (renowned painter, advisor to China Graphic Art Association, the former deputy and advisor president of Shanghai Artists Association, president of Shanghai Graphic Art Society):

Zhu Xuanxian produced fruitful art works, including his latest work Midsummer in the South——My Hometown, which describes the beautiful countryside scenery in south China, a decorative representation of the actual situation, with a flavor of graphic art, and particularly the white space in the picture with green theme, which makes the scene refreshing. Such arrangement of blank space is also well reflected in The Banyan Lake in Dripping Green and Beautiful Mountain Area. Such a skill is due to the successful application of his “ink-thrifty” experience in traditional Chinese painting to the graphic art.

Zhao Yannian (renowned artist, advisor of China Graphic Artists Association and Professor of China Academy of Art):

To express distinctive artistic conceptions by way of different color tones is the characteristic of the chromatic woodcut works by Zhu Xuanxian. I'm very interested in this.

Wang Bomin (famous fine art history critic, disciplinary leader of Chinese fine art history, doctor advisor of China Academy of Art, honorary chairman of Hangzhou Artists Association and honorary president of Hangzhou Fine Arts Academy):

Zhu Xuanxian's work Today is Children's Day?! in 1947 was a profound reflection of that era. The work Enthralled after the Liberation was so exciting, full of relish. The works featuring flower and bird presents another flavor, among which the best ones are the works like South Wind and Hardy and Verdant Pine.

Pang Xunqín (Renowned oil painter, the first deputy president and professor of the former Central Industrial Art College (now the Art College of Tsinghua University))

The works of Zhu Xuanxian have their own features and academic value. In the past dozens of years, he was involved in organizing the social arts activities, but he persisted in the works of traditional Chinese paintings, woodcuts and cartoons etc., without any compromise in quality. Such prudence is really a rare thing.

Shao Keping (famous artist):

We may compare Zhu Xuanxian's work Night to a melodious serenade, which brings us serenity and comfort. Moreover, his Early Spring in Countryside, Reading at Night in the May Seventh Cadre School, Bashan Mountains in Autumn Moonlight and Midsummer in the South etc. are all fine works.

Zhu Xuanxian’s caricature is rather vivid, innovative in conception, with profound meaning and amusing effect. His caricature works well grasp the features, with conspicuous characteristics of the time.

Li Qun (famous artist, renowned fine art critic, honorary chairman of Shanxi Federation of Literary and Art Circles, honorary chairman of Shanxi Artists Association, honorary president of Shanxi Fine Arts Academy and former member of the Secretariat of China Artists Association):

I've appreciated the paintings by Zhu Xuanxian, like Night. They are all excellent works of Chinese Graphic.

Shen Peng (renowned calligraphist, the former president and now honorary president of China Calligraphists Association, advisor to Peking University, the former vice-chairman of China Federation of Literary and Art Circles):

Zhu Xuanxian’s works are fantastic, and remind me of the verse, “the orioles are singing in the green woods of one thousand miles”.

Li Keran (renowned painter, the former deputy president of China Artists Association, professor of China Central Academy of Fine Arts):

The works of Zhu Xuanxian show a kind of momentum, and are quite interesting.

Sun Qifeng (renowned artist, honorary chairman of Tianjin Artists Association, vice-president and tenured professor of Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts and member of Beijing Traditional Chineses Painting Research Institute):

After reading through Chinese Paintings of Flower and Bird by Zhu Xuanxian (Selected Collection), I found that Zhu enjoyed his unique style in traditional Chinese painting. Specialty and fineness is the most important criteria for arts estimation. Only innovation is not enough, art work has to be both innovative and fine so that to endure through society and history; Innovation is temporary but fineness remains unchanged. In the Collection, I find Loquats is quite good, full of happiness and vigor. The longer you look at it, the better you will find it is. The limited frame seem to lead you among loquat trees, which is the magic effect of “less is more”. What's more, the works like South Wind, After Rain and Hardy and Verdant Pine have their respective good features.

Ma Ke (Renowned artistic commentator, director of the Literature Department of the People’s Daily, the editor with the former Fine Arts monthly):

Zhu Xuanjian's work Night is just like a serenade singing the praises of new personality and novelty. With the soft wind and clean moonlight, the painting exhibits novelty and profound conception.

Shen Fuwen (Renowned artistic educationalist, renowned lacquerware artist, the former president and the honorary president and professor of Sichuan Fine Arts Institute):

Zhu Xuanxian is a good friend of many of us, and I have always admired his personality, his selfless character, his strong capabilities in work coordination, his broad mind and his diligence in arts, which I think deserve our respect and learning.

Yuan Xiaocen (honorary president of Yunnan Artists Association, honorary president of Yunnan Fine Arts Academy, honorary president and professor of Yunnan Arts University):

Mr. Zhu Xuanxian had been persistent in the creation of works on traditional Chinese painting, woodcut, and caricature are simultaneously and achieved a lot in various fields, which are rarely seen in the circle.

Chao Mei (chairman of Heilongjiang Artists Association):

Mr. Zhu Xuanjian is a veteran of Chinese woodcut circle. I saw his works during my school year at Nanjing in 1940s'. Over the last half a century, he has been committed in woodcut painting in spite of busy work. It is respectable.

Zhao Zongzao (vice-chairman of Zhejiang Artists Association, vice-president and professor of China Academy of Art):

Viewing Collection of Woodcuts by Zhu Xuanxian, for the first time I saw so many of his works. It's a big surprise. I'm really fond of his little woodcuts in his early years. After reading The Before and After I Started Woodcutting written by Zhu himself and the Preface by Yang Keyang in this Collection, I understood that Zhu produced so many outstanding works despite the busy work as an art editor of news publishing and an organizer of fine art activities. His diligent spirit is really respectable!

Li Zhongxiang (vice-chairman of Yunnan Artists Association):

I've appreciated the works of Mr. Zhu Xuanxian even as I was a high school student. For example, the work named Night impressed me so deeply that I'll never forget.

Lin Mu (renowned art history critic, member of the Theory Committee of China Artists Association, professor of Sichuan University, president of the Fine Arts Institute of Sichuan Normal University):

In the art career of more than half a century, Mr. Zhu Xuanxian experienced the road from a revolutionary soldier to a lyricist, and from the spear and dagger to the pure art. This is consistent with the development of Chinese art in the 20th century. Maybe the time value of his works lies in the study of them from this point of view.

Li Yunjing (researcher of Beijing Lu Xun Museum):

Zhu Xuanxian’s wash paintings feature in strong power, perfect skill and deep conception, the colors are just right while composition is precise. Viewing his works, your passion for life is to be inspired easily. The work Harvest shows the painter's affection to life from the exuberant vitality in the painting; while Rustling Wind features in the unique Zhu’s Style, exaggerating while appropriately portraying sparrow's live shape and verve, the loveliness and cuteness is rare; moreover, The Coming of Autumn is also a classic, with simple lines to create a vivicacious duck, with the overall layout free and easy.

Zheng Shuang (vice-chairman of Guangdong Artists Association and professor of Guangzhou Academy of Fine Arts):

I've seen the footsteps of an old artist through Zhu Xuanxian’s works. His works have a strong sense of times.

Anne Farrer (doctor, Department of Oriental Antiquities, The British Museum):

Dear Mr. Zhu Xuanxian, I was very interested to see your woodcuts. As you may know, the British Museum is making a collection of twentieth century Chinese prints. On my next visit to Chongqing I would very much like to visit you and collect examples of your work for our collection.
